Tributes as Nigerian player Lawal dies in Uganda accident

There has been an outpour of tributes from Nigerian and Ugandan clubs following the death of former Wikki Tourists, Nasarawa United player and former junior international Abubakar Lawal, who lost his life in a devastating accident in Uganda on Monday.

According to reports in Uganda, Lawal, 29, who played for Vipers FC of Uganda, was said to have met his untimely death in a motorcycle accident at Entebbe Road in Kampala, the country’s capital.

Vipers SC, in a statement, confirmed the death of the player.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning (Monday). His body has been transferred to a medical facility for postmortem examination. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Other clubs including one of his former team in Nigeria, have also paid tributes to the player.

NPFL side Nasarawa United wrote, “We mourn the sudden demise of our ex-player Abubakar Lawal earlier today. May God grant him eternal rest.”

“The entire UPDF FC family is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Vipers SC forward Abubakar Lawal, who passed away in a motorbike accident. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Vipers SC, the family of the deceased, and the entire football fraternity,” Ugandan club UPDF wrote.

He moved from Wikki Tourists to Nasarawa United in 2019 before joining As Kigali in 2020.

After two years in Rwanda, he moved to Uganda, where he joined Vipers.
