CDS celebrated at Sokoto school’s 50th anniversary
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, was honoured on Saturday during the 50th reunion of old students of Malam Yahya Abdulkarim Model Primary School, Sokoto.
The event, held at the school’s premises, brought together former students, teachers, and dignitaries to celebrate the institution’s legacy and achievements.
The Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, was represented by his deputy, Idris Muhammad Gobir, who emphasised the government’s commitment to improving the education sector.
He commended the organisers for sustaining the alumni reunion, noting its significance in fostering relationships and advancing the school’s development.
In his remarks, General Musa expressed deep gratitude to his alma mater for shaping his formative years. He acknowledged the contributions of past and present teachers and pledged his support for the school’s continued growth.
“This school played a crucial role in shaping my early years, and I am honoured to be back here among my former classmates and teachers. The values and lessons I learned here have guided me throughout my career,” he stated.
The event also provided an opportunity for the Sokoto State Government to highlight its educational initiatives, even as the deputy governor outlined key achievements to include: “Construction of 147 new classrooms and renovation of 142 existing ones, provision of 208 VIP toilets, school fencing, and boreholes to enhance learning conditions.
“Training and retraining of teachers across all 23 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs), procurement of 9,852 sets of furniture for both pupils and teachers and reintroduction of the School Feeding Programme for 23 boarding schools, benefiting over 17,000 students at a cost of ₦680 million annually.
“Provision of sporting facilities for public schools and a monthly imprest of N200,000 for principals to handle minor repairs and maintenance.”
Gobir also listed “the renovation of major secondary and primary schools, including the Government Science Secondary School, Yabo; the Sultan Abubakar College Sokoto, and Sokoto Teachers College,” among others.
The governor’s representative reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to sustaining these initiatives and ensuring that Sokoto remains a center of quality education.
The reunion concluded with an awards ceremony recognising outstanding teachers and alumni who have contributed to the school’s progress.
General Musa received the special recognition for his distinguished service to the nation and his commitment to giving back to his roots.
Dignitaries, education stakeholders, and community leaders attended the event, commending it as a model for alumni engagement and educational development.
