Will Ganduje-Barau Alliance Reshape Kano APC’s Future?
The political landscape of Kano State is shifting as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, and Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, move toward reconciliation.
A source within Ganduje’s camp, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the two APC leaders have taken steps to resolve their political differences.
“This reconciliation is a major step. The misunderstanding between Ganduje and Senator Barau is now a thing of the past, and they are working together,” the source said. Describing the reconciliation as a “political necessity,” the source added, “In politics, there are no permanent enemies, only permanent interests.”
Their growing political unity became evident earlier this month when both leaders attended the wedding fatiha of the daughters of Senator Suleiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila and the first convocation of Al-Istiqama University in Sumaila.
Immediately after returning from Sumaila town on Saturday evening, the two APC bigwigs visited Rimin Zakara village to condole with community members following the demolition of houses in the area. A clash erupted during the incident, leading to the killing of some people and the injury of others.
The turning point was Ganduje’s presence at Senator Barau’s event for the first time, where the Deputy Senate President distributed 61 cars and 1,137 motorcycles. The event was attended by key stakeholders of the APC in the state.
Addressing the crowd, the Kano State Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Abbas, emphasized Barau’s contributions. He stated that the Deputy Senate President has been funding party activities since the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) took over the state in 2023.
“Barau is the senator for all in Kano State. Yes, he represents Kano North, but he is also for the people of Kano Central, Kano South, and everybody,” he said.
Abbas also noted that in 2027, aspirants would be judged based on their contributions since 2023. Speaking at the event, Ganduje praised Barau’s initiative, describing it as a move to solidify party cohesion.
“This empowerment is to consolidate our party, strengthen our party, improve the livelihood of our members, and enhance employment opportunities—not just for APC members but for the entire state,” he stated.
Kano Times learned that the new alliance is drawing attention among party members, with many who previously distanced themselves from Senator Barau now openly supporting his programs on social media. Among them are former Kano Municipal Local Government Chairman, Fa’izu Alfindiki, and former Special Assistant to Ganduje on Social Media, Abubakar Aminu Ibrahim.
Commenting on this development, the source added, “When you see APC members who are Ganduje loyalists now actively posting about Barau’s activities on their Facebook pages, you should know that the tide has turned.”
Observers believe this unity could reshape the APC’s structure in Kano ahead of future contests. Mukhtar Mudi Spikin, a political analyst, described the reconciliation as inevitable, given their shared opposition to the ruling NNPP and Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso.
“This reconciliation between Senator Barau Jibrin and APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is purely strategic—driven by the APC’s ambition to reclaim Kano State from the NNPP’s Kwankwasiyya movement in the next general elections,” he stated.
Spikin further explained, “Senator Barau holds a high-ranking position, has financial resources, and strong political ambition. That’s why he is receiving support to achieve his goals. However, once that is accomplished, internal power struggles within the party are likely to emerge.”
