Adamawa school proprietor, teacher nabbed for torturing student

The Adamawa State Police Zone 3 has arrested the proprietor of Aliyu Mustapha College, Mrs Amada Pam, and a teacher, simply identified as Mr Morgan, at Upper Luggere in Jimeta, Yola, the state capital, over the torture of a student.

Our correspondent was informed by a security source who did not want to be identified that the student, called Jafa Bashiru, was last week Wednesday, tortured by a teacher identified by one of the security officers of the school as Mr. Morgan.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Wednesday that the proprietor contacted the Karewa Police Station to arrest the father of the student who was alleged to have attempted to attack Morgan after school hours, but the policemen deployed to carry out the arrest declined when they saw the condition of the student in his pool of blood with family members in tears.

The Police Public Relations Officer Zone 3 comprising Adamawa and Taraba states, SP Yusuf Mohammed, who exclusively confirmed the sad incident to PUNCH Metro via a telephone interview, said the proprietor had been summoned to appear on Wednesday for investigation.

“The father of the boy has written his statement on the matter and we will ensure justice in this case. The police cannot turn their eyes from criminal brutality,” he said.

A top government official who spoke to PUNCH Metro, but didn’t want his name in print, said the government might shut down the school to serve as a detriment to other proprietors.

“We have been receiving negative reports about the school, but this case is one case too many. A drastic action must be taken this time,” he said.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the proprietor and the teacher would be charged in court on Thursday.

The Zone 3 PPRO on Wednesday told our correspondent on the telephone that he would give details of the incident on Thursday.

“Yes, I confirm that the case is before Zone 3 and the proprietor has been invited to appear on Wednesday,” he said.

When PUNCH Metro called him at the close of work on Wednesday to know whether the proprietor honoured the invitation, he said, “Throughout today, I was out of the office. So, I can’t confirm if the proprietor was in the office or not. But by tomorrow (Thursday), I can give you the full details.”
