Senator Natasha Accuses Akpabio of Sexual Advances

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of making persistent sexual advances toward her, alleging that his “intimate love calls” often come late at night.

She claimed that whenever she received such calls, she would wake her husband and put the conversations on speaker.

Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise News Channel, the Kogi Central Senator alleged that her refusal to yield to Akpabio’s advances was the reason behind his antagonism toward her.

She maintained that the Senate President’s actions, both within and outside the country, had led to her victimization in the Senate.

On the controversy surrounding her Senate seating arrangement, Akpoti-Uduaghan acknowledged that Order 10 of the Senate Rules states that senators must speak from their designated seats. However, she argued that when raising matters of privilege, senators are allowed to speak from any position.

When asked why her female colleagues in the Senate had not spoken out in her defense, she said, “Their reasons are best known to them.” She added that the Senator representing the FCT, Ireti Kingibe, had called to criticize her for filing a defamation suit against the Senate President.

Addressing Akpabio’s remarks about nightclubs, Akpoti-Uduaghan asserted that his comments were not a slip of the tongue. She alleged that he had once suggested organizing a private party in the form of a nightclub for them to have fun.

She likened her predicament to that of a young female student who refuses sexual advances from a lecturer but remains determined to uphold her integrity despite facing victimization.

Akpoti-Uduaghan also denied corruption allegations filed against her by a northern youth group in a petition to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, Public Petitions, and Code of Conduct. She claimed the petition was orchestrated by individuals who wanted her to share committee funds with them.

She further alleged that the Senate leadership had warned her against challenging Akpabio, stating that if he were to “go down,” she would also face consequences.

Recounting an incident on December 18, 2023, a day before both her and Akpabio’s birthdays, Akpoti-Uduaghan detailed an encounter at his residence in Akwa Ibom.

She recalled “We were all in Akwa Ibom for his birthday celebration. My husband and I, along with some of his close friends, were at his house in Ikot Ekpene before moving to his residence in Uyo. Around 8 p.m., he held my hand and said he wanted to show me around his house. My husband was walking behind us, busy on his phone but still watching occasionally.”

“As we moved from room to room, he asked, ‘Do you like my house?’ I responded, ‘Of course, sir. Every room is beautiful with a nice interior and quality taste.’ Then he said, ‘Now that you’re a senator, I’m going to create time for us to come spend quality moments here. You will enjoy it.’”

“At that moment, I pulled away because I wasn’t sure what he meant. I turned around and noticed my husband looking at me and then at him, as if he had heard something. The Senate President also seemed unsure whether my husband had caught his remark.”

“To change the subject, Akpabio then said, ‘Oh, by the way, let me show you my chapel.’ We walked there in silence.”

Later that night, after leaving Akpabio’s residence for their hotel, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s husband questioned her about what the Senate President had said.

“My husband asked me, ‘Natasha, what did the Senate President tell you?’ I hesitated. Should I tell him that Akpabio suggested bringing me there for ‘special moments,’ or should I just let it go?”

“I gave him vague answers to mask the conversation. Later, as we lay in bed, my husband wrapped his arms around me and said, ‘My love, you know you can tell me anything. What did the Senate President tell you?’ Again, I avoided the full truth, saying, ‘Nothing, nothing. Moreover, it’s my birthday in a few minutes, let’s just be happy.’”
