Kano Information Commissioner Pledges Support for Nigerian Broadcasters
The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has pledged to work with the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB) to improve professionalism in the broadcasting sector.
Comrade Waiya gave this assurance while receiving members of the SNB, Kano State Chapter, in his office. He stressed the need for staff of state-owned broadcast agencies to register with the professional body.
“We are committed to working closely with the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters to ensure that our state-owned media houses operate at the highest professional standards. This includes making sure that all staff are duly registered with the SNB,” the Commissioner stated.
He also emphasized the need to regulate certain broadcast content, particularly political programs, to prevent misinformation and protect the reputations of individuals.
“The era of unregulated political discourse that promotes misinformation must be addressed. We will work with the SNB to ensure that media content aligns with ethical standards, societal values, and religious principles,” Waiya added.
Earlier, the Kano State Coordinator of the SNB, Hajiya Aishatu Sule, congratulated Comrade Waiya on his appointment and reaffirmed the Society’s role in regulating broadcasting in Nigeria.
“The Society of Nigerian Broadcasters is the professional body responsible for regulating the broadcasting industry. No individual should practice as a broadcaster without registering with us,” she explained.
The Vice President of SNB, North West Zone, Ado Sa’idu Warawa, urged the ministry to support the Society in organizing workshops on emerging technologies in digital broadcasting.
“With the rapid evolution of media technology, broadcasters must be equipped with modern tools such as AI to meet global standards,” Warawa said. He also called on the Commissioner to assist in securing a secretariat for the Society.
