15,000 buses needed to transport Lagos passengers daily – LAMATA

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority on Wednesday stated that up to 15,000 public buses are needed to transport passengers in Lagos.

LAMATA’s Managing Director, Abimbola Akinajo, made this known while hosting a delegation from the Public Complaints Commission on a courtesy call to the agency at Alausa, Ikeja.

A statement on the agency’s X handle noted that the PCC tabled complaints regarding bus availability and long waiting times at stations across the state.

The PCC delegation, led by its Commissioner, Hafeez Odunewu, along with Director of Investigations Ayinde Wale and other commission officials, visited LAMATA with a mission to get first-hand information on the challenges of the agency’s franchisees.

The primary concerns centred on the availability of buses and the extended waiting times experienced by commuters on various routes.

In response, LAMATA MD addressed the delegation, acknowledging the agency’s awareness of the situation.

She explained that LAMATA was actively working with the private sector to increase the number of buses in operation.

“The MD further announced that LAMATA was expecting a significant boost in the public transport fleet with the delivery of approximately 500 CNG buses and 50 electric vehicles by the last quarter of this year.

“She also informed the delegation that studies indicate Lagos requires around 15,000 buses to function optimally, while the current operational fleet is a little over 1,000,” the statement said.

The PCC delegation expressed gratitude to the MD for her warm reception and the detailed responses to their inquiries.
