Senate Suspends Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan For Six Months Over Dispute With Akpabio

The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following her dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which stemmed from sexual harassment allegations she levied against him.

The decision, based on the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, was announced on Thursday, March 6, 2025.

As part of the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s salary and security details will be withdrawn, and she will be barred from accessing the National Assembly premises during the suspension period.

The committee also recommended that she should not represent Nigeria in any official capacity as a senator.

The controversy began when Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, submitted a petition accusing Akpabio of misconduct. The petition, which was initially dismissed on procedural grounds, was later resubmitted with signatures from her constituents.

The Senate’s decision has sparked widespread reactions, with supporters of Akpoti-Uduaghan calling it an attempt to silence her, while others argue that the legislative body is simply enforcing its rules.
