Customs hand over 3,365 seized cannabis parcels to NDLEA
The Controller of Ogun I Area Command, Nigeria Customs Service, Idiroko, Mohammed Shuaibu, has insisted that the command won’t give a breathing space to those engaging in practices that pose threat to the nation’s economy and security.
Shuaibu reiterated this warning on Thursday while handing over 3,365 parcels and 75 sacks of cannabis weighing 3,103.3kg to the state command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
Also handed to the NDLEA at the Abeokuta office of the customs command were 88 cartons of codeine cough syrup.
Shuaibu explained that the haulage of these narcotics was part of the N279,595,038.00 contraband impounded across the state in the past two weeks.
He explained that “Other seizures made during this period include 2,145 bags of foreign rice which is more than four trailers’ load, 612 bales of second-hand clothing, 843 used tyres as well as 6,625 litres of Premium Motor Spirit which has been auctioned due to its combustible nature.
“The Duty Paid Value of the entire seizures amount to N279,595,038.00. The command also generated a total of N9,694,072 as revenue from baggage assessment and auction sales of the PMS.”
Shuaibu disclosed that the seizure of the large consignment of narcotics reflected the ongoing efforts of the command to crack down on the distribution of illegal drugs within the country due to its significant threats to the health and safety of the citizens.
He disclosed, “These actions should send a clear and unequivocal message to those who engage in illegal activities that the operatives of Ogun 1 Command will continue to carry out their statutory responsibilities with dedication, ensuring that such illegal enterprises do not thrive in our area of responsibility.”
Shuaibu while hailing its officers for their sense of patriotism and dedication to serving the country also expressed gratitude to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and his management team for their continued support to the command.
Receiving the impounded narcotics from the customs, the NDLEA State Commander, Tijani Rabe, represented by the Deputy State Commander, Operations and Training, Alex Nnyigide, lauded the synergy between the two security agencies.
Rabe who lauded the eagle-eyed officers of the command however urged them to keep helping to fight the battle against drug peddlers in the country to a standstill.
