Protest Erupts at Dangote Sugar Refinery as Adamawa Farmers Resist Expansion

A large crowd of peasant farmers gathered on Tuesday to protest at the Dangote Sugar Refinery in Yola, Adamawa State, accusing the company of land grabbing.

The protesters, drawn from the Kola, Dumna, and Zakawon districts in Guyuk Local Government Area, vowed to resist the planned expansion of Dangote’s sugarcane farm.

Carrying placards with various inscriptions, the visibly distressed farmers said the expansion threatened their only means of livelihood.

The leader of the protesters, David Time, warned that taking over their farmlands would exacerbate hunger and insecurity in the area.

He also accused the company of failing in its corporate social responsibility, stating that it had not built a single medical facility, school, or provided water and roads for the communities.

To prevent a crisis, he urged President Bola Tinubu and Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to intervene and halt the expansion.

“Where will our farmers go if Dangote Sugar Refinery takes over our farmlands? What will become of our youths?” Time asked.

“Farming is our only means of survival. We reject in totality any expansion move by Dangote Sugar Refinery,” he added.

When contacted, Daniel Andrew, the Community Relations Officer for Dangote Sugar Refinery, declined to comment, citing personal health reasons.
