RISE Project: Canada, Kano Partner to Transform Agriculture

Kano State will participate in the Resilient and Inclusive Agri-food Systems Empowering Women and Youth (RISE) project, a Canadian initiative focused on agriculture and economic opportunities for women and youth in Northern Nigeria.  

The project, led by the Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) of Canada in partnership with Nigerian organizations, aims to support agribusinesses, smallholder farmers, and cooperatives in Kano, Bauchi, and Kaduna states.

The project seeks to improve economic stability, food security, and employment in agriculture.

A statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature DawakinTofa, noted that the project, with a budget of ₦20.2 billion (Can$19.2 million), will assist women- and youth-led enterprises with training and resources while generating 8,000 jobs.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf stressed the importance of using climate-smart technology to address environmental challenges.

“Nigeria has bursting potential in its agricultural sector but faces big challenges, including the severe effects of climate change, like flooding and desertification. Supporting the empowerment of women and youth and arming them with climate-smart technology will help Kano advance its development and economic goals. I look forward to seeing the RISE project help do this,” the governor stated.
