Yusuf converts Kano’s ancient worship ground to Islamic centre

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has announced the conversion of the historic Kofar Mata Eid Prayer Ground into an International Islamic Conference Centre, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to religious development and harmony.

The announcement came during an Iftar gathering hosted by the governor at the Government House on Saturday, where he welcomed prominent members of the Council of Ulama and Imams.

The event, marking the 15th day of Ramadan, served as an avenue to strengthen ties with religious leaders and unveil key initiatives aimed at enhancing Islamic infrastructure in the state.

A statement on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, further explained that the Eid ground, which is currently used only twice a year, will be transformed into a permanent hub for Islamic propagation and scholarly engagements.

“Rather than leaving the ground idle or allowing it to be misused, we are repurposing it into a world-class Islamic Centre that will serve the Muslim community throughout the year,” he stated.

He disclosed that the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the project is set to take place two weeks after the Eid al-Fitr, after which the centre will be handed over to the Ulama for management.

In addition to this major transformation, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to renovating all Friday mosques across the state to ensure they meet a befitting standard for worshippers.

As a result, he directed the Commissioner for Religious Affairs to compile a list of mosques in urgent need of government’s intervention.

“We are committed to ensuring that our mosques are well-maintained and conducive for worship. No place of prayer in Kano should be left in a state of disrepair,” Governor Yusuf emphasised.

He also announced the construction of a new, larger Government House Friday Mosque, designed to accommodate more worshippers and enhance spiritual activities.

Expressing his appreciation for the continuous prayers and guidance of religious leaders, the governor urged them to continue fostering unity and peaceful coexistence among Kano’s diverse population.

Speaking on behalf of the religious leaders, Sheikh Muhammad Nasir Adam, the Imam of Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Mosque, commended the governor’s vision, saying,

“Islam encourages feeding those who fast and developing places of worship.

“The governor’s initiative aligns with these values, and we will continue to support his efforts with prayers and guidance,” he said.

The Iftar gathering was attended by members of the Shari’a Commission, the Executive Council, and other distinguished personalities.

The governor reiterated his administration’s strong partnership with the Council of Ulama, assuring them that their input would continue to shape policies to ensure lasting peace, stability, and religious harmony in Kano State.
