Japa: Don urges better pay, improved working conditions for workers
The Vice-Chancellor of Precious Cornerstone University, Ibadan, Prof Timothy Adejumo, has called on the government and private organisations to offer better remuneration and create a conducive work environment to curb the rising ‘Japa’ trend.
He gave this advice during the inauguration of new Governing Council members of the institution, held at the Senate Chamber, Olaogun, Old-Ife Road, Ibadan, on Saturday.
Adejumo urged them to discourage Nigerians, particularly young people who are leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad, by providing necessary support to safeguard them.
He said, “The solution to Japa syndrome is to give a very good remuneration package to workers.
“The government and various organisations should make the environment conducive for their workers, make it to be friendly and provide equipment to work with, it’s on that basis that staff can stay.
“We (PCU) just increased our staff salary. We promote them and send them to regular training. These are what people need to make them conducive, and we thank God; He is helping us to provide all that the staff needed.”
He therefore prayed to God to strengthen the newly inaugurated council members to exceed the expectations of the institution.
“I know that with the calibre of people we have on board now, the institution is poised for greater height, and our expectations include the student enrolment to increase, the winning of research grants, of course, improved funding, infrastructure, student welfare and movement to our permanent site and other campuses,” he stated
The VC also thanked the outgone council members for their efforts to ensure that the university secured full accreditation status from the National University Commission for all its programs.
In his acceptance speech, the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Prof Dapo Asaju, who was former Vice Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, promised that the council would operate with the collective wisdom of everyone to see that the university achieves its set goal.
Other members of the council include Prof Akinwale Coker, Prof Muritala Awodun, Dr Philip Oyewale, Engineer Jacob Ajibola, Engineer Joseph Adesope, Engineer Olukunmi Akintayo, Dr Olayinka Kotila, Barrister Ayodele Laogun, Mr Abayomi Bello and Mr Kunmi Adedeji.
