Sule Lamido Slams Seyi Tinubu Over Food Aid: ‘Arewa Is Not a Begging Region’

Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has criticized the recent visit of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to northern Nigeria, where he distributed food to residents during the Ramadan fasting period.

Lamido described the act as “humiliating” and an insult to the dignity of the northern people, accusing Seyi Tinubu of portraying the region as one that survives on handouts.

In a video where he addressed a gathering in Hausa, Lamido condemned the gesture, calling it degrading and politically motivated.

“You will hear people saying that Arewa is known for bravery and integrity, yet Tinubu is going to Sokoto and Kano, distributing cooked rice to our people.

“This is total humiliation. Is this how to govern or promote good governance? What Tinubu is doing to the northern people is an insult.

“Is this what we have been subjected to? This is the height of humiliation, and they know it. Arewa, which produced great leaders like Aminu Kano, Sardauna (Sir Ahmadu Bello), Tafawa Balewa, and many other prominent figures, is now being reduced to a region where people are only given cooked rice.

“However, it is up to us to unite and resist this humiliation or fold our hands and allow an outsider to come to our region and belittle us.”

“It is time to stand for what is right. If we stay on the right track in this country, no one can ever defeat us.”

Seyi Tinubu recently toured several northern states, including Niger, distributing food packages branded with images of himself and President Tinubu. Among the items shared was Danwake—a local dish made from bean flour—packaged in plastic bags featuring the President’s image.

However, this initiative sparked criticism from many northern communities, who viewed the move as insensitive. Critics argued that distributing basic street food items during Ramadan Iftar—a sacred time for Muslims—was not an act of genuine kindness but rather a political move aimed at gaining public sympathy amid economic hardship.

Social media users also voiced their displeasure, questioning the timing and sincerity of Seyi Tinubu’s actions. Many saw it as an attempt to reduce the dignity of the North, a region known for its historical leadership and resilience.
